Welcome...
Hi, I'm Tim Willcox, an expressive, mixed-media painter. Here I present my most recent abstract work fuelled by a profound love of colour, deep layered texture, and a stubborn urge to experiment with whatever materials are within reach. I work with acrylics, collage both found and created, scraps of clippings and cuttings, oil and chalk pastels, spray and stencils, graffiti drip paints and a whole host of pencils, markers, waxes and sometimes experimental mark making tools that many would say have no business being anywhere near a canvas! My palate is broad and grows with each project.
My process is challenging, physical and often a messy tug-of-war between control and chaos. Surfaces are layered, scratched and scraped back, rebuilt, and layered again; marks appear, disappear, and reappear in an altered guise. I chase the energy this creates, the tension between elements that are a natural outcome. I love the kind of happy accidents that arrive uninvited but end up making a non-negotiable home in my art.
The results are expressive, curious, cheeky and sometimes a little irreverent often poking an accusatory finger at the oddities of modern life and apportioning blame. But in their conceptual 'blurriness', always leaving space for those looking in to find their own meaning in the mayhem.
Put simply, I believe the results are expressive, energetic pieces of process driven painting, playfully hinting at problems of modern life.
